I wrote about my research and writing toolchain, in case that's a thing you might be interested.

It's mostly about which tools I use for what with which settings.

And here are the springtails, which I now love very much as well…

I got myself some isopods since I am allergic to almost any other normal pet… they are so unbelievably cute! I didn’t expect that.

I also got some springtails. They help keep the container free of molds. Didn’t expect to get so many. Now I have a springtail colony as well…

How are you with video games? I'm a big big fan. They're almost my favourite escapist medium… I haven't played in a while and decided to make games a habit again. So I went through my collection on Steam, GOG and of course itch, categorized them, looked up playtime length and put some though into which I want to play next.

I just finished "Wide Ocean Big Jacket" and it's a beautiful short piece of coming of age and adult-problems storytelling. It's funny, heartwarming and so, so innocent. There were also some "Alba" moments, another one of my favourites.

If you got some change to spare, grab a copy. It's worth the money.

music recommendation

I'm absolutely in love with this
Marijuana Deathsquads recording from Berlin marijuanadeathsquads.bandcamp.. It's like throwing together Atari Teenage Riot's "Speed" and Chemical Brother's "Hey Boy Hey Girl".

And if you like that, check out their song "Last Sunny Day" which is a blast.

I gathered some loose thoughts on and in relation to myself. More rambling than elaboration…

runner's thoughts

Today I ran and as so often I had a discussion with myself meanwhile. It was about why I run. Here is the gist of it.

I don't run for the stats or numbers. Not to improve myself, become a better me or optimized. Neither to compare or be in competition. For sure not to have fun.

I run because I decided to.

And I deem this reading on agency important enough to share it. So often we do things because somebody or something sold us a story why we should do this or believe that. In a corporate world so much of our intent and agency is geared towards other ends and means then ourselves and our communities.

I run because I decided to.

On my tracks around the neighbourhood somebody planted a tomato-plant in an old tree-trunk. I love that.

These three things go well together. Either by closeness of subjects treated or by color scheme, you choose.

I found the pair of Adidas Falcons in a secondhand shop yesterday and fell in love instantly. The two books are just really wonderful in expanding the headspace towards multi-species living. Soil is fascinating

Hello friends 👋 I want to make a survey for this little zine I'm preparing (and for which you all still could send in contributions).

What is the laziest thing that you ever did in your life?

Slide into my DMs or send me an mail to adrian@thgie.ch. As you feel comfortable.

This the link to the call for contributions, in case I got you interested jache.re/notes/call-fallow-zin

The fact that something like hammockforums.net exists makes me incredible happy. People comming together, talking about hammock? Count me in! (Although, I didn't look at the content and lord knows what they actually discuss…)

It’s fermentation o’clock. We had way to many lemons, and you know how it goes. If life gives you lemons, pickle them, tastes awesome. Also we run out of fermented hot sauce. I tried a new, sweeter, carrot-based recipe. Looking forward to see how that one is in a few weeks. Also some sauerkraut, because why not.

We're happy to announce that we just started to work on three new interdependent online resources: the Damaged Earth Catalog, the Permacomputing wiki, and the permacomputing workshop series!

Damaged Earth Catalog

A growing online catalog of the different terms in circulation, used by communities of practice, in relation to computing and network infrastructure informed by ecological ethics, degrowth, resilience, repair, and minimalism. Currently developed by @l03s as part of her PhD research.

Permacomputing wiki

A new wiki about permacomputing that aims to expose its principles, present and discuss the concepts and jargon required to engage with permacomputing, and maintain a repository of related projects. Currently facilitated by @viznut and @320x200 open for contributors!

Permacomputing in the Arts

A workshop series that will be developed throughout end-2022 and 2023 as an onboarding course for permacomputing practices in art an design. The workshops will be made available as an Open Educational Resource. Developed by @320x200 as part of a postdoc research on the topic.

The question is neither what is the meaning or what is our purpose. The question is where do we belong?

There is a glas with some “color” on it and it powers my electronic devices? This honestly feels a bit like black magic! And yes, this little beast is solar powered now ☀️

Vibrant Matter by Jane Bennett

Hell no, she didn't… well, there goes another 9 years of reading Jane Bennett 😅

Vibrant Matter by Jane Bennett

One of the most fascinating paths for me is the attribution of personhood through jurisdictional processes, such as the river Whanganui in Aotearoa, and many more examples by now. I figured the law is a language westerners like me understand, epistemologically speaking. A lot of ontological negotiations are happening via this path. What is subject, object, or agency are questions that are relegated to the language of the law.

I found Jane Bennett's approach to political philosophy similar but different. It is richer in depth, poetics and individuality, also because of her style. It speaks directly to my practice and daily experience. It ends with epistemological violence that I enjoy quite a lot. It is shaking the fundamentals on which my everyday experience is based and it is refreshing, even exhilarating at times. And I have the feeling that it gives me a vocabulary to speak what I'm feeling.

Vibrant Matter by Jane Bennett

I just finished Vibrant Matter by Jane Bennet... after 9 years of being on and off this book. And it was worth it. I'm into the thing/multispecies/nonhuman discourse for a good while and I always struggled with exactly one major problem that this book addresses so well. How to flatten the ontology, when one comes from a place of hierarchy. Or more specifically: I grew up in central Europe with all its background of racism, colonialism, sexism, homo- and transphobia and you name it, all designed to create hierarchies of power. And now I should be able to step outside these not just for people and animals, but also cumulus clouds, lithium, cockroaches, doorknobs, and blades of grass? Many indigenous communities have their specific ways of incorporating such a view, deeply rooted in their respective stories.

I don't have these and I'm jealous of them.

I'm starting a small call for entries for a yet-to-exist 'zine on tech for resting, being lazy, letting be, and having a break. Share wide and far.

For the first Fallow Zine, la Jachère is interested in contributions about the following topics, but not limited to them.

- Lazy tech or tech for the lazies
- Tech that falls into place, fits, is just enough
- Tech for rest, pause, have a break, take a breath
- Tech for preservation, of the status quo, of energy, of a moment, of equilibrium

- Deadline: 21. June 2022 (more or less… deadlines are thresholds to play with)

Running Practice

Some years ago I found running as a wonderful practice for myself. I love to move but don’t like to do sports at all.

After a while I figured that I like running not because I get fit, but because it calms me. It’s a peace of mind that I hardly reach by any other means but substance abuse.

The first five minutes are usually fighting the inner demon, little things that feel unpleasant in body and mind and tell me to don’t do this run, it’s futile anyway. The next five minutes are filled with rage. Close and far moments pop up, which made me angry and I couldn’t resolve. I often end up arguing in my head with specific people, meanwhile figuring out, what made me angry. The third five minutes are just that. Some empty five minutes of void I pass through. And then, somewhere between 15 - 25 minutes I outrun myself.

In that last timeframe, I often have the sudden impulse to stop and walk. Not because I’m tired but because the world went quiet. And it is really nice to be able to be an empty vessel at times.

I do have meditation experience, so some of that might have swept over.
