Tidal has always had two big limitations - being only about trigger messages (can't change a sound while it's playing), and having no state (so can't natively do things like markov chains). I always thought these were design trade-offs of representing pattern as a function of time. But this year I seem to have solved both of these problems, by applying some pretty tripped-out philosophy of time, that ended up resulting in very small representational tweaks.. Sometimes when you stare at a problem for long enough it melts away
@janriemer @haitch @alcinnz @mathew This. And, this is exactly why I advocate for TDD in particular. People often ask, "if you code the test first even if you don't know what you need, how is that any better?" The answer is the same as why accountant needs to use double entry bookkeeping even though she doesn't know your specific business -- it's not about the domain knowledge. That is relevant only to overall design of the software. What it boils down to is double entry software development. The tests are there to look for discrepancies and to warn you about them. It is not a means to writing correct software into itself. You still need to have a vision, or "common metaphor" in extreme programming terms, and that will take some artistry on your part as a developer.
Hey livecoders, there's a new @tidalcycles version in town, a lot of improvements, check it out!
