hello! I'm ryan challinor, a coder/designer/prototyper/game developer with a strong interest in music and interactive systems. I don't consider myself a musician, but I love making music

in 2011 I started building a DAW-like modular synth environment to help me learn about music and audio programming, and I've worked on it obsessively ever since. in 2021 I released its 1.0 version publicly open-source as "bespoke synth" (bespokesynth.com/)

most of what I post here will likely be about features I add to bespoke, or videos of music I make in bespoke. you can go see some of that stuff over on the bird site, while it still exists: twitter.com/awwbees

I'm a dad, I like biking around the city, I have a MIDI controller addiction, and I recently joined a bouldering gym

black friday special: the new songbuilder module is now available in the latest bespoke nightly build! come give it a whirl and tell me what works well and what doesn't.
here's a demo video: youtu.be/kzYUgPMMpts

11 years ago today, I wrote the first lines of code for bespoke. happy bespokiversary!
historical trivia: bespoke's original project name was "additiveSynth", because the concept was about adding a bunch of signals together. at the time, I didn't know that "additive synth" was already a term that meant something else. you can still find that original name sprinkled in a few places in bespoke's code.

I've been looking at pattern sequencers in trackers and song mode on the elektron devices, and have started to build a "songbuilder" module in bespoke to allow for working in that sort of way. it's looking really promising so far!
