We soft-announced the next a couple weeks ago and I thought I should share the call here!

Our Networks 2047: Redistributing the Future
November 14 – 27, 2022
Online, Distributed
ournetworks.ca/

After a year of hibernation, we're excited to invite you to join us for an experimental online event - something between an alternate reality conference, and wiki as collaborative science fiction. Drawing inspiration from our favourite sci-fi authors we’re headed to a future for Our Networks 2̶0̶2̶2̶ 2047.

We are seeking session leaders to spend at max a couple hours writing abstracts and pitches for the hypothetical conference programming and spending some time checking in on a wiki over the two weeks of the event.
To declare your interest, please submit a character’s name and bio, area of interest or talk by October 15, 2022. More details here: ournetworks.ca/

OPEN CALL!

We’re back! We are happy to announce that on the 5th & 6th of November, @zinecamp is back for its 2022 edition at WORM Rotterdam! As always, there will be stalls, workshops, talks and more. And, of course, it is free to join!

Zine Camp is a space to connect with the self-publishing community, make friends and learn new skills and techniques. We also have open tables to collaborate and create your own zines on site.

📍To apply to hold a workshop or talk, email zinecampfestival@gmail.com with your details, a title, description, how long your proposal needs and an image.

📍For stalls, send us your details, and a link with your zines, website or portfolio!

📍Deadline for the open call is the 25th September!

hugs,
Zine Camp Team 💕

I asked my friend Jérémy Landes to collaborate on the design of a libre font forked from DejaVu Sans, able to spread like mycelium thanks to the variable technology. It is named “Fungal Sans” and it is available for download at fungal.page (still wip).

The consequences of not maintaining and improving that body of existing applications are beautifully illustrated by a paragraph in another paper in the conference: "Off-the-shelf digital tools as a resource to nurture the commons" by Mela Bettega, Raul Masu, Nicolai Brodersen Hansen and Maurizio Teli. There, the researchers are weighing Conversations () which is the ideal fit in theory, but fails in practice. In the end they end up suggesting Telegram.

Today I presented my paper On Cultivating The Installable Base at Participatory Design Conference ().

In it, I argue that existing F/LOSS alternatives (such as Mastodon) are important resources when it comes to participatory work with groups looking to organize their own digital infrastructure, as it allows them to practically start inquiring in the nature of those alternatives and start thinking from there. However, to even consider them for such a process, the quality of those alternatives needs to be sufficient. So if PD wants to bring about computational alternatives, improving the quality of existing F/LOSS applications in concrete and material ways should be an important research outcome.

Read & Repair is back on the 27th of August! :)

Vegetality and Virtuality feat. Georgiana Cojocaru and Bérénice Staiger

In the Read session with Georgiana Cojocaru, we will discuss what are the virtual, fragile and always threatened possibilities for recovery of a body which is considered beyond repair, beyond any semblance to a former self. What attracts possibilities for re-knowing and re-ordering a living being ? How does a shattered mind move? When the poetic act tries to stay within this state, map its ambiance, its pulsations, its circuitous rhythms what kind of creations emerge? How close is poetry to sentience? How could a stuttering, nervous awareness ordain itself into a virtual possibility: a story, a new plot, an impermanent thought that might materialize into a newborn possibility?

During the Repair session, Bérénice Staiger takes us through her interest in bees and the swarm in particular. Bérénice also introduces meditative exercises for relaxation. She will guide us to relax through sensory exercises. For this she uses simple instructions and as an extra she takes products that bees collect in nature: honey, propolis and pollen. We will feel, smell, and taste the products. We will also go outside to experience our surroundings with our senses.

Deadline extended till Aug. 28 for our curating/fermenting data workshop at NordiCHI in October w/ Magda Tyżlik-Carver and @lukasfx. Just send us a short email w/ expression of interest, very low bureaucracy threshold :)

Help spreading the word, appreciated too! Anyone interested in working with data interfaces, curation and fermentation processes while thinking critically about the production of knowledge online is very welcome!

It’s funny how quickly I went from being enchanted by the hooting of an owl at 2am to wondering when the hell that bird was going to stfu

Hi everyone! My name is Evan, I'm a product design student from Ireland. I joined the fediverse last year to explore more ways of communicating with people online, and I'm glad to have found Lurk!
My main interests include:
∙ Design, be it physical, graphical or software.
∙ Photography, especially exploring interesting ways of taking photos.
∙ Learning. I love learning about technology, sustainability and languages.
I also love origami, bees and exploring the world around me. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on here!

More sanity from my home country: Māori tribal leaders & their advisers call for data sovereignty, to take back control of what is theirs. Cited is "an intergenerational approach to data, as a taonga (treasure)"

Self-hosting is included as a strategy, servers at home & on the marae (meeting house).

This initiative can be seen as a form of infrastructural de-colonisation, reclaiming what has been lost to the digital imperialism of AWS, Microsoft & other 'cloud' giants

Hi all! 🌊 Recently moved to @dcwalk from @dcwalk@mstdn.io so doing a here.

I am a researcher and designer interested in how to build lasting and transformational alternatives to existing infrastructures, in the past this has included data stewardship, networks, and movement organizing. Now I am focused on the practices and language of low carbon networking.

Currently packing up my life and moving across the country, hoping to camp and spend some time offline along the way ⛺
