💍 In sign of the times, Ayn Rand Institute approved for Paycheck Protection Program loan.

Hilarious story from The Onion.

In #GlitchSoc, public local-only toots (that is, toots that are never rendered outside the originating instance, never presented to non-logged-in users) appear in both the Federated timeline and the Local timeline.

My reasoning to not change that was that the Local timeline has always been a subset of the Federated timeline… like, the Federated timeline is “all public toots known to the instance”.

But this appears to confuse some people, so, should local-only toots appear in the Federated timeline, or only in the Local timeline?

When we say we are a mutual aid event, what we mean is that 100% of the money we get via the donate link will be shared out with artists.
All of our events are streamed online and free to tune in to, but we're asking people whoa re in work (or who have institutional support to attend conferences and festivals) to please donate to help support our artists.

Covid has hit live music hard and this is an event by and for artists to support our community and showcase the community-building potential and accessibility of music shared via the internet.

Please tune in and please give if you can! Get an early bird ticket now!

Fedi meta - reading recomendation

If you havent yet, do read "seven theses on the fediverse and the becoming of floss"

I think it is really insightful.
It also help look back at the progress we made and maybe clarify the road ahead

"I also got a bad taste in my mouth from Twitter supporting kinds of speech that I don't particularly agree with, and I began to feel like putting my toys and art there was just adding value to the network. For a while I felt that the tradeoff was that the art I published there still enriched my life and the lives of my friends. At some point, though, I started to feel like the balance got out of whack, and I could do more good by putting my work on alternate networks and giving people a reason to get off Twitter. "

All cultural producers with some degree of audience and influence should really think about this: what structures do I validate by my presence? What and whose structures do I reinforce? What other places can I advantage?

Among people who know about (use, have heard, etc.), how many of you know what the XSF is?

Very very interesting long read about the possible future of ActivityPub, the underlying protocol of Mastodon and Queer Haus.

Many of the concerns mentioned here in this proposal is why we chose to limit the connections that Queer Haus has to the rest of the fediverse. To build our own curated slice of the fediverse.

This proposal aims to solve this descent into fediverse nation states by making the network itself aware of consent.

Fascinating stuff! Thanks @rra for the link!

Any way to automatically prune empty accounts that have never been active at all?

Does anyone know whether there is work being done digital / publication collections with ?

It is already built in software like calibre and calibre-web and is used for e-readers to download publications. But... federated calibre-web when?

I'm looking for bass/footwork DJs and artists on the fediverse, can y'all help me by reposting?

'Politics are not external to technical architecture. As sites of control over technology, the decisions embedded within protocols embed values and reflect the socioeconomic and political interests of protocol developers. In a discussion about debates over Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) versus TCP/IP in Inventing the Internet, Janet Abbate notes that technical standards are often construed as neutral and therefore not historically interesting. Perceptions of neutrality derive in part from the esoteric and concealed nature of network protocols within the broader realm of information technology. As Abbate demonstrates, “The debate over network protocols illustrates how standards can be politics by other means. . . . Efforts to create formal standards bring system builders’ private technical decisions into the public realm; in this way, standards battles can bring to light unspoken assumptions and conflicts of interest. The very passion with which stakeholders contest standards decisions should alert us to the deeper meanings beneath the nuts and bolts.”

Really excited about the release of this new research into decentralized systems and UX/usability considerations... a topic very close to my heart.

It has lots of actionable advice useful to anyone building projects and products in this domain. The research includes input from folk in many communities, including #matrix and #xmpp.

@guimachiavelli and I didn't really know where to publish our weird takes on so we came up with our own text repository. It's called because non-player characters are our friends.

Repaired headphone jack: cast into a piece of PVC pipe with some epoxy. Not very green, but better than getting a new set!

Oh if anyone wants a copy of the German expressionist films:

- Metropolis
- The Golem
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

then the torrent magnet links are listed in the following thread. I and others are seeding so they should be available. They're 720p, two have English subtitles and The Golem has none.

I've only watched Metropolis so far but I already like the genre!
