This Sunday @ccl and i are giving a workshop during the Impakt Festival around ORES, Wikipedia's machine learning service. You are all very welcome to join us!

The theme of this year's Impakt festival is post-truth, fake news and algorithmic superstructures.
We will speak about the position of Wikipedia in the wake of the current media climate and fake news, where we find ourselves suddenly turning to Wikipedia as a reliable source of information.

During the workshop we will dive into the mechanisms that support Wikipedia to be regarded as such, by looking at the machine learning service ORES that Wikipedia uses against vandalism.

We will discuss examples of how Wikipedia struggles with vandalism, look into the feminist inspirations of the ORES project, and do a writing exercise together to explore our understanding of the the 'good faith' and 'damaging' parameters that are used to prevent vandalism but not scare away new editors.

Don't miss Life Hacks: Space happening on the 31st of October at varia! varia.zone/en/lifehacks.html

What shapes the daily routine of a telemarketing sales agent? How to go beyond the co-working model when it comes to organize a place for collaboration? What's the territorial and political role of furniture within the semi-domestic area of the artist's studio? Are life hacks a form of liberation or yet another burden? Together with author and designer François Girard-Meunier, the WORKNOT! collective (Arvand Pourabbasi and Golnar Abbasi), Varia, the Centre for Everyday Technology (represented by @rra, @manetta and Niek Hilkmann) and XPUB (the Experimental Publishing program of the Piet Zwart Institute), we will tackle these and more questions during an evening dedicated to spaces that are at once entrepreneurial and precarious.

A feminist server…

Is a situated technology. She has a sense of context and considers herself to be part of an ecology of practices

Is run for and by a community that cares enough for her in order to make her exist

Builds on the materiality of , and the gathered around it

Opens herself to expose processes, tools, sources, habits, patterns

Does not strive for seamlessness. Talk of transparency too often signals that something is being made invisible

Avoids efficiency, ease-of-use, scalability and immediacy because they can be traps

Knows that is actually an , promiscuous and parasitic practice

Is autonomous in the sense that she decides for her own dependencies

Radically questions the conditions for serving and service; experiments with changing client-server relations where she can

Treats network technology as part of a social reality

Wants networks to be mutable and read-write accessible

Does not confuse safety with security

Takes the risk of exposing her insecurity

Tries hard not to apologize when she is sometimes not available "

Niels is doing super strong work advocating for implementing human rights considerations in internet standards that would basically make spec for setting (or unsetting) routing policies for autonomous networks based on human rights considerations

If you're interested in self-hosting online services for yourself, your family or your community, there are a number of projects on the Fediverse trying to make it easier:

YunoHost
@yunohost

FreedomBone
@bob
freedombone.net

FreedomBox
@freedomboxfndn
freedombox.org/

You don't need an expensive server, cheap machines such as old desktops/laptops and single-board computers (such as the #RaspberryPi) will work too.
