"The fediverse is diverse because you can follow anyone from any server. The local timeline plays no role in that and doesn’t even exist in ActivityPub as a concept. Being able to choose a different server has always been about trust for the service provider and rules. I’m fully aware that for some people the local timeline is basically like a Slack or IRC chatroom and for this reason the feature cannot be removed from Mastodon in the foreseeable future, but it was never meant to be that, and I see no reason to add it to an app that targets new users rather than existing ones."

Wow 1: this is dismissing one of the core things that makes this place nice and usable, the local timeline and the communities that emerge around it. I guess it makes sense from the point of view of the super generic server with 50k people active that Eugen is maintaining.

Wow 2: "for this reason the feature cannot be removed from Mastodon in the foreseeable future" implies it might be removed from the software as a concept altogether at some point.

@mousebot I don't really understand the issue. I don't understand why the local timeline shouldn't be on an app. I don't really use it, but I like it being there, and if I had my own instance, or was part of a very niche small instance, I'd probably use it all the time.

@rra The "it's not in the protocol", which we could call the "protocol authority argument", is sterile, imho. I think the "why" local and federated timeline are not present in the app has a clear explanation from the start. It does not need this convoluted justification. But I'm sure, the pressure on Eugen is heavy right now. Though I would not speculate on where Mastodon's future from this.

I do appreciate the sudden discussion about the relevance of timelines it creates.

@rra As a Mastodon admin, I'm always left in state of confusion when Eugen does literally anything.

I've asked him to blog about his greater vision or roadmap... but he's well sick of me personally and never replies with much substance which I can understand. I'm pretty fucking annoying begging him to implement ANY kind of UX feature.

@rra Eugen once said that he thinks that the federated timeline will be removed somewhere in the future. One little step to remove the local timeline as well.

He really thinks he is the owner of Mastodon, despite all the work by other people. Maybe this is a good time to make a major fork!

That is one od reasons why I never recommend Mastodon. Fire to monopolies!
