technical mastodon admin question Show more
Is there a good way to remove old/inactive profile pictures and account headers cached by mastodon? This instance is sitting on 20GB of those, seems a bit much.
They are not removed by the tootctl media remove command.
@rraI guess @thomas wrote a script for cleaning up old mastodon files. But don't take my word for it.
@luricaun @rra I made Masto Purge for that.
GitHub - ThomasLeister/mastopurge: Purges Mastodon accounts. Removes posts. Makes things clean again. - https://github.com/ThomasLeister/mastopurge
But it's only a user tool, not for Admins.

@rra You might try this suggestion from @ben a couple months ago: https://mastodon.lubar.me/@ben/101844332341859957
`tootctl media` also has a subcommand that will remove old cached stuff
@ben I believe that was the command @rra specifically called out as not cutting the mustard :3
@mawr @ben Media remove doesn't clear the avatars, header images and card_previews. I'm trying the statuses one.
I'm wondering whether I can rm -r those files otherwise.. would it redownload those media files when they are missing?
@rra @mawr I think it can cause problems for local backups, but if you're careful it should be fine
