A lot of people claim that design is what makes big corporate platforms and apps successful but I'm skeptical. Maybe it has more to do with authority. Software that fits into a conventional idea of social order and patriarchy might be easier to trust.

Love reading this as a Github issue. Reminds me of @320x200 & @rra fediverse talk where they touched on the repurposing of issue trackers for political discussions.

if gopherspace is a fantasy realm, the tildes and other pubnixes are cities and towns but spaces like, and are wizard towers

"The current rush towards contact tracing apps is at risk of framing COVID-19 exposure as an exclusively technical problem"

Hey, in case you haven't noticed: society now nearly completely operates in a super networked way; COVID-19 accelerated that.

So working on user freedom issues (software, network, etc rights) has never mattered more. And there is much good we can do.

@despens You're right that it can be seen as a kind of virtue signaling -- "look, zoom is evil software! We are vigilant and won't let it control our data!" while happily going on with office and google apps.

But it's also a window of opportunity to talk about the privacy holes in proprietary cloud software. I don't remember seeing the subject so present in the mainstream press (mostly en_US, but still.)

It's a rare chance to be able to address decision makers in schools and other institutions, and help them see the risk of blindly choosing platforms based on the feature list alone.

Starting from the Zoom debacle that most are familiar with by now, you can finally begin the conversation about other SaaS choices, and the importance of digital sovereignty and infrastructural control. I'm positive that this is a point that many institutions will review once the dust settles.

On the internet, no one knows you're a Raspberry Pi

@tomsart Wow, both are beautiful! I dig the alternative pronounciation of hi-at-us

We could use a new word for the awkward moment at the beginning of a videocall when we sort out technical issues and ask each other if they're listening/seeing us, the blank wait in the meantime until the conversation can actually start

Really, I'd love to have a word for this. I'm sure you can come up with good things, fediverse :-)
