To be clear, I would give my kid a high five not because I understand what they are doing, but because they are doing something that I exactly don't. I don't know anything about how to run a pirate BBS or how a modem and a computer function talk to each other. However, I admire the character that comes with pirate communications platforms, and the curiosity that might lead to coupling it together. I feel like some responses I've gotten to this post are like "aye, then the kid would be just like me, also a techie!" but I didn't go up with that background. I just hope for future generations, digital literacy is more accessible.

@pixouls I'd be seriously impressed. My kid is four year old and only has occassional access to an iPad. If he can run a pirate BBS with that, I'm ready to learn from the next generation!

Look, if your kid isn't doing piracy at some age, you'll probably will need to have a serious conversation with them. They might be harbouring thoughts about capitalism and it's good to openly talk about. So that they'll understand the consequences of their choices in that.
