Cheap reverbs. Cheap reverbs everywhere.

If there's a character talking, and they are outside where it is snowing, what kind of reverb do you choose?

None. The correct answer is none.

Say a prisoner is talking in a small prison cell with a glass wall. The other character, and the audience, is on the other side of that wall. What kind of reverb do you put our prisoner in?

Dunk it in a giant empty cathedral with granite walls. Big and bright. Really capture that sibilance.

No wait sorry. The answer is a very small room, with some kind of filter or attenuation to simulate the glass wall. But not too much to impact intelligibility. No reverb is also fine.

Okay okay. So what if you flip to a cut where we are *in* the room? Less room tone than when we were out of the room right? Cuz that make sense.

Okay this is just a guess... but it sounds like there is some predelay or something applied to these reverbs? It is super distracting. Also it's super bright so it is regurgitating all the sibilance. Intelligibility feels diminished.

If you're mixing in in reverb on speech for TV/film, reverb should feel invisible. Unless it is explicitly a part of plot development.

@paul so long as it's a reverberating crow's voice! Yeah as a singer I love reverb but it's so often way overdone.

@martyn reverb for music is different than for speech. I dunk my music in reverb. Most musical styles benefit when the singer is in placed in a giant space. Film and television and similar mediums require a bit more restraint and nuance.
