Here's a thought: self-hosting all technology, a common end goal of many software freedom enthusiasts, has nothing to do with freedom. Rather, it's the logical end of hyper-individualism applied to source code.

Registrations open for "Life Perceives" ~ symposium on perceptions across the spectrum of life... Jan 20th in Brighton! 🐟 🐜 🍄 🌱 👁️

Life Perceives is a symposium bringing together scientists and artists for an open exploration of how "perception" can be understood as a phenomenon that does not only belong to humans, or even the so-called "higher organisms", but exists across the entire spectrum of life in a myriad of forms.

@yaxu I recommend doing it for half a day as a start. When I switch off my internet access I occasionally want to look up references and it itches me when I can’t use Wikipedia etc.

@raeaw and there is the consent issue for recording phone calls. But you can turn it around and use the cold calls you get on your answering machine :)

@benjaoming Sweden is part of the EU. How does putting kids on instagram with GDPR? (E.g. what is the purpose of the image/data processing and for how long is that data required to full fill this purpose?)

"The fediverse needs critical mass to survive!"

I've been here since 2017. Sometimes it's been a quiet place. Sometimes it's fast-paced. But it's had enough critical mass for survival for a long while.

Now what it needs it to become a _better_ place, not bigger.

Safer, nicer, friendlier, more welcoming to those at risk. A hasty push for more "critical mass" is likely to make these communities more aggressive, less forgiving, and less sustainable in the long term.

You’ll note that all of the discourse around Mastodon and Fediverse adoption now is about it “challenging” or “taking over” from Twitter.

This is yet another instance of pop culture taking over the discourse. Pop culture has to have a winner. It’s always a competition. Improvement or serving the end user is always secondary to winning out in a popularity contest.

Be extremely skeptical of any advice that is framed by the pop culture leaderboard. It’s likely to be toxic in the long run.

on the left: not a single one of these devices still boots. most of them did, when they were first put on the shelf. even if they could be repaired to boot up, a secure operating system no longer exists that will run on them

on the right: each one of these still works great, other than batteries (replaceable) and the occasional loose hinge. despite the average age being 2x of the phones, half of them are still in active everyday use

had a weird dream that i was looking at a toot that ranked the best use of and it said:

1. art
...
5. music
...
10. operating systems

and then i woke up and giggled to myself for a few seconds before falling back asleep.

I think this is my best #LichenSubscribe picture from this year; not recent, taken in April (still early spring in these parts)

meta mastodon talk

I should probably develop this thought further in not-a-microblog, but I think maybe it would be helpful to situate federated social in the context of mutual aid and concepts like "we keep us safe" rather than replicating a model of deferring responsibility to a corporation.

“Seven of the biggest emitters of GHGs – the United States, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Australia – collectively spent at least twice as much on border and immigration enforcement (more than $33.1 billion) as on climate finance ($14.4 billion) between 2013 and 2018,” according to the report.

one problem with people saying that older dystopian novels predicted the future is that it disregards that the problems they tackle were also relevant at the time the novel was written. we just haven't fixed anything and the problems have compounded. as expected.

it worries me to imply that these problems are new and not a culmination of decades worth of compounding legislation and attitudes.
