“Social media wasn’t web 2.0, it’s what killed Web 2.0!”
I enjoyed this article on what web 2.0 actually was, and I’m tickled that I only saw it because @BenCollver posted it to comp.misc.
@mycorrhiza @bob I guess it's because I lived through it. After the dotcom crash there was a lot of despondency and cynicism about the internet and especially the web. The consensus opinion was that either "nobody" or (more realistically) not enough people were prepared to pay for web services.
People liked the web, but had no idea how to pay to keep servers running without going bankrupt. The web needed a reboot, with some new business model. In the early 2000s if someone was trying to raise venture capital using the same model as the late 1990s boom they would have been laughed at.
A fediverse community for discussions around cultural freedom, experimental, new media art, net and computational culture, and things like that.
