I’m still new to using Mastodon regularly. In general, I think the differences between Twitter and here are more cultural than technical. That said, I’ve become convinced that not implementing “quote toots” was the absolute right move, and after digging a little bit deeper I’m gladdened to see that this was intentional: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/309#issuecomment-469260847
@mycorrhiza In my experience most social networks start out this way until they hit critical mass. Seems like, at that point, it becomes a game of trying to make engagement numbers get bigger which leads to people being inflammatory, images being given privilege over text, short and sarcastic winning over thoughtful consideration, and all sorts of other behaviors that reduce the quality of interactions.
@RadDevon Yeah I agree with your assessment. I do wonder if the federated nature would mitigate that a bit; sure, Mastodon as a whole could become a cesspool, but I don’t see that happening to my particular instance (I chose it very carefully!). Who knows if we’ll even get the chance to find out?
@RadDevon One thing I have decided: I have no interest in interacting with “the whole internet”, and I am perfectly content if the things I write never have an audience of more people than I can remember.
@mycorrhiza @RadDevon There is the whole Twitter thing of people becoming self-important because they have big numbers on their profile (or just bought a lot of followers). Hot takes and sensationalist instant-outrage stuff going viral isn't impossible in the fediverse, but it's just much less likely to happen as posts travel through assorted instances and varying moderation policies. And that tends to turn down the heat.
@mycorrhiza I’m on the largest instance and surf the federated timeline frequently. I still find the quality of interactions much higher. Maybe that’s more about me though, finally understanding what I want from a social network and how to get it. I do feel there are some culture differences that contribute too.
Whatever the case, let’s cross our fingers it stays like this. 🤞 😅
