🥳 lumbung.space is online 🥳

We've been working with ruangrupa & friends for a while now and we're super proud to see the project launched!

Here's an excerpt from the public post:

The aim of lumbung.space is to create a digital infrastructure that is maintained by the lumbung network without being dependent upon exploitative digital infrastructures. The pandemic and the ensuing digitization of many aspects of creative practice, offered an extra reason to focus on networked media practices. lumbung.space, therefore, is an urgent experiment that tries out what an artist-run digital space could be like.

lumbung.space was conceptualized and developed together with @rra an artist and doctoral candidate in Interaction Design at Malmö University and with @autonomic. Their work for lumbung.space is part of the @coopcloud initiative, which allows other collectives to set up similar infrastructures.

This Friday, March 25th, from 18h to 21h @ Page not Found, Boekhorststraat 126, The Hague

Page Not Found and the Master Experimental Publishing (XPUB) at the Piet Zwart Institute, Willem de Kooning Academy, invite you to the launch of the Special Issue “This Box Found You For A Reason”.

This trimester I had the great pleasure of working together with the XPUB staff and master students to explore how features of (video)games are making us more, not less, productive. The form of the publication that emerged reworks the figure of the loot box, a typically virtual and predatory monetisation scheme.

The launch features presentations by the XPUB students and a discussion with Sepp Eckenhaussen and Koen Bartijn, directors of Platform BK. They will engage in conversation on the economics of the publication, and on larger questions of how the labour of artists and designers is valued and what structures, guidelines and policies can help (small scale) institutions ensure that these practices remain sustainable.

A book is... (work in progress)
Jian Haake (current XPUB first year student)

Question about a specific PDF format known as PDF/X-1a:2001

It's a bit of a shot in the dark perhaps, but does anyone have experience with saving or converting PDFs into the specific format known as PDF/X-1a:2001 without using Adobe products?

We made booklets using web-to-print techniques, to document the Digital Solidarity Networks events we hosted at before the summer. We would like to print them at a digital/POD printer, which rejected our files. It seems to be that the PDF/X-1a:2001 is really the standard in the world of digital and POD print and when searching online you bump into many "no sorry, use Adobe" answers.

One way to do it seems through Scribus, by importing the PDF as high res images. handcraftsman.wordpress.com/20

But a CLI tool would be sooo useful. :)

Okay, so: German court decided on Jan. 20th 2022 that sites will need to host Google fonts locally.

Visitors are otherwise entitled to receive 100€ in recompensation for Google fonts transferring IP numbers to Google servers.
Google uses fonts to track users, especially if they are logged into only one other server, where stored personal data might identify them.

Next week we will celebrate the (online) launch of 📗 🖥️ Vernaculars come to matter 🖥️📗, a publication around forms of vernacular languaging, software culture, and textual archives.

varia.zone/en/double-launch-si

We are super proud to publish the work of 5 co-conspirators in which the vernacular appears at 💥 eye level in the reverse diasporic circulation of Dutch-Turkish street typography (Cengiz Mengüç); 💥 in the attitude of photo editing software such as ImageMagick, manifested as software culture (@automatist); 💥 as a way of doing, living, and working in the Philippines, appearing as the non-standard-English voice (Clara Balaguer); 💥 as a way to navigate the Leftove.rs archive of MayDay Rooms, where historial ephemera require a very particular attention (Rosemary Grennan); 💥 or as a continuous struggle with bureaucratic rigidity while transitioning gender or name (Ren Loren Britton).

The publication is co-edited by @ccl, @jules, @manetta and published in a printed and digital form by everyday-technology-press, a new publishing initiative of .

Join the celebration on Friday 17 December between 19:00 and 20:30 (CET) at stream.vvvvvvaria.org, the contributors will be present to introduce their work!

I’m happy to announce the Drowning in Æther - Signal hunting bike rides.
The during the month of December I invite you to join me on a trip through the radio spectrum. We are going to hunt for as well as make audible signals of ghost satellites and satellite radio pirates hijacking abandoned military satellites. For the last couple of weeks, I have been assembling a mobile listening station, a cargo bike with a sound system, my antennas, and all the necessary equipment to hunt for satellite signals. During these collaborative bike rides, we try to sync up with the circadian rhythms of the satellites and explore the urban environment of Rotterdam to find the perfect spot to capture their radio signals.
Due to the current Covid situation, I’m planning multiple rides with small groups. The bikes will not only bring us to our listening spots but also help us to keep a healthy distance. So far, I scheduled the 4. & 5. of December as well as the 11. & 12. of December, but other spontaneous group rides during the month could be planned by contacting me.
If you are interested and want to receive updates, please sign up to the Drowning in Æther mailing list via this link:
