We're doing another MEDIUM new years eve / day drone this year: medium.radio.af

I need to fix the wobsite again, but there's a bit more info there.

The gist is that a buncha folks make drones into a shared audio stream for 24+ hours to ring in the new year.

Might be a few slots available, let me know if you'd like to join! (The only rule is basically: don't disturb the drone.)

venting about work

I am not a computer and I hate being treated like an extension of one.

The header image for this account is a music box disk for a fisher price "record" player aimed at small children. (The 1970s version, not the more recent one.)

I've got niblings in the target age group for this again, so I'll shortly be revisiting my code and adding features on the todo list and so forth.

The older brother/cousin is now the age range for a real record player, so I might be looking into to DIY lathes, like this one: figch.de/index.php?nav=recordl

I think a piezo disk might be better than a dynamic speaker and I only care about mono, so the major obstacle I can forsee is making sure the record is spinning at the right rate and the lathe is scooting along at the right rate. In an ideal world, they'd be geared together, but that's a LOT of design skill and I fear 3d printed gears would be inadequate.

I have a vague notion that if I could track the real speed, I could vary the playback rate of the file, to compensate for any drag.

There's also the possibility of 3d printing records, but the sound quality is not great. This also would require a steep learning curve for STL files.

Pick your poison.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share on 'why?', I'd appreciate a comment or DM if you're not comfortable going public, but please do vote ;-)

Boosts welcome! \m/

I am going to make one composition each day of December. 01/12: Earth

Otherwise I delight in wasting time in these ways.

FWIW the only reason I'm concerned about wasting time is that this remix will be overdue already by tomorrow, and I'm clearly not done yet. :)

I guess I could spend more time tweaking the analysis and classification params, too.

That seems like a waste of time tho. Imperfect gross generalizations are a useful starting point.

This is a nice starting point, but further ear-driven processing is clearly required.

Does anyone have any experience with Dendron knowledge management system? or has some recommendations for other systems? https://www.dendron.so/

Those numbers are based on querying the features to get maximum, minimum and averages. Hats have an above average centroid, bongs have an above average flatness, etc.

if length > 5 and flatness < 0.001:
classification = 'cymbal'
elif length <= 5 and centroid > 4667:
classification = 'hat'
elif length <= 5 and flatness > 0.001:
classification = 'bong'
else:
classification = 'misc'

Classification results:

sqlite> select count(*) from sounds where groupname='cymbal';
120
sqlite> select count(*) from sounds where groupname='hat';
853
sqlite> select count(*) from sounds where groupname='bong';
95
sqlite> select count(*) from sounds where groupname='misc';
564

Lookin' forward to all those so-called hats, yay!

- Start with a long ambient recording of processed electric bass (if you are me and doing a remix of it, otherwise try any other sound)

- Highpass everything above 12,000hz

- Resample speed down several octaves (that part I did in audacity with the spectral view, and moreso you know, like, my ears)

- Break into segments via onset detection, ditch segments longer than 30 seconds

- Listen again

Next steps:

- Sort cross-referenced by length, spectral flatness and spectral centroid

- Use longer sounds with less flatness for splashy cymbal type things
- Use shorter sounds with higher centroids for hat / rattle type things
- Use shorter sounds with more flatness for rimshotty and kicky type things
- Process all further with filters, delays and the usual stuff to taste as appropriate

Or do something else. Bon appetite!

Fix for the filter blowing up: removing the filter for the moment.
