Randomly found an article that has some great thoughts on the wretched old "Art vs. Entertainment" / "Avant-garde vs. Mainstream" Dichotomies. I've had discussions with a friend on experimental film a while back and this nicely formulates my view of things, just applied to modern music.

... my view being: If an artist 100% indulges in idiosyncratic caprice and shows absolutely no interest in what it does for me as their audience, then that artist can expect similar disregard from my side. Which is not to say I consider their work any less valuable, but simply that if they want my time and attention, they need to show respect for it as well.
