If we called it “applied statistics” instead of “machine learning” or “artificial intelligence” we’d probably get fewer people asking if the computer is alive.

"I do not see that computers are bringing us one step nearer to anything that does matter to me: peace, economic justice, ecological health, political honesty, family and community stability, good work."

On the point about going low tech in an #authoritarian regime, an example is that using an old-fashioned paper filing system to keep organizational records is literally invisible to a high tech surveillance state. Provided that you practice good disposal methods (eg. burn old records) the regime will not be able to access your data unless they deploy boots on the ground.

Boots on the ground is what they never want to do except in very limited cases, because it doesn't scale, is expensive, and there is a high risk of secret police fucking up their opsec and being detected.

Hot Snakes are still the best post-hardcore + Wipers combination.

Feeling the need to get back into a research mindset but finding it really challenging right now.

What was it like playing Angry Birds on an iPhone 3G? We do not know; Apple is no longer distributing signed receipts for that binary. To future historians—not just of computing, but of humanity—the current period will be a dark age.

Rather than make new devices that will turn into e-waste after the event, we're recycling old price tags into networked conference badges. https://github.com/osresearch/eink-pricetags

I love getting asked to do remixes ... it really takes me out of my usual workflow and comfort zone often resulting in music i would be really unlikely to have made otherwise... sometimes even in styles/genres i don't usually do.

I make my best work when I stop worrying about who else did something similar already and just make it.

I have a new album out today. It is all computer-processed guitar that loops and cycles.

And it's out on a great small (micro) label from the UK, Hard Return.

One of my favorite things about living in Toronto (and there are a lot) is how big the waterfront is. A 60 minute walk or short public transit ride from home and I can walk along the multiple kilometer beach boardwalk. On weekdays it’s not that busy.

Spent the day rearranging furniture and artwork. Feels so nice and refreshed, like a new home. Highly recommended

Paul Slocum, software developer who has been curating, conserving, and selling digital art since 2006 wrote an excellent and extensive survey of the effects and problems in the takeover of networked culture by creepto-capital.

He couldn't find a suitable publication for his critical perspective which speaks volumes about the state of media institutions which made a name and raise funding precisely promoting the opposite values to those of blockchain culture and now are totally integrated and participating in the cultural and economic distortion described by Paul.

Do read and share widely.

Tonight I performed an improvisation for site specific field recordings and tuned digital resonators (quadraphonic) for an audience of ten people and it felt great.

i'm starting to sell large chunks of my record collection, which has been accumulating for about 25 years. it's so hard to part with these things, but in the end i only listen to probably 10% of what i have, and the rest just sits there... it will feel like a relief when it's down to a size where i can actually know what i have and enjoy it. but it's hard.
