During the trust <in> formation workshop we will take the ORES project as an inspiration for machine learning done ethically: transparency in the decision making process and stimulation of multiplicity of uses.
Instead of "post-truth" algorithms, we'll make the jump to "post-trust" algorithms: the workshop looks at the reasons why Wikipedia is currently seen as a trustable source of information mainly built through collaboration. It's not only trusted by humans, but also by machine learning developers: many models use its articles to train or test on. The fact that Wikipedia has its in-house team working on machine learning is a less known fact: the ORES project.
The workshop will provide a practical experiment in which the participants are invited to write together under the watch of the ORES models and prove their good faith.
I'm in #Bucharest this week, invited by ODD for a lecture and group therapy :)
Any fedi users/lurkers around? Let's meet!
Sick and tired of relying on using Google Translate/DeepL/SYSTRAN/$$$Corp for language translation? It's time to build the free software alternative! Read my brain dump on https://email@example.com/thread/JL3QGPSUD75UB2X2ZOQ7WPLX23KXXBZ6/ if that sounds interesting. Help Needed!
Spain court confirms jail sentence for former IMF chief Rato
All possibilities of appeal are exhausted, one of the most high-profile bankers of Spain needs to go to jail now. This makes Spain only the second country (after Iceland) where any prominent banker were sent to jail following the 2008 financial crisis. What this article fails to mention, like all others I found, is that the trial and conviction was due to an unprecedented citzien's campaign (led by people such as Simona
Levi), which raised funds, hired lawyers and organized leaks to gather evidence. More on this aspect in an (older) article in The Nation.

quote on digital infrastructures Show more
"Devil’s Bridge mythologies are based in part on the conviction that human hands alone could not possibly have undertaken such state-of-the-art technical structures and that their very accomplishment must have exceeded human capacity at a number of levels. And in the incredible uplift of their vaulted overarching spans, they also seem somehow to shed their own materiality. Devil’s Bridges serve to remind us that in the face of new and mystifying technologies—in this instance, an architecture explicitly designed to overhang an otherwise intractable distance—it is sometimes equally difficult to suspend our disbelief; that the construction of physical, connective infrastructure might just as well be conceived as a leap of faith."

Give an open equivalent, #OpenNMT (Open Neural Machine Translate) a try! There's a live #translation page (similar to Google Translate) at:
“The Techno-Galactic Guide to Software Observation is the obsessive fantasy of optimization turned on its head and stuck to the ceiling of a self-reflecting elevator. It is the ultimate book, with almost 300 pages of dos and don’ts, of forgotten #histories and un-inevitable #futures, of mindful agile actions and improvisational service architectures, of any and all things that you can and cannot imagine needing in a techno-galaxy.”

Today is the opening of the The Warp and Weft of Memory at Castrum Peregrini, where Renee Turner will present her work. It has been a rewarding time assisting this project: tackling issues of digitisation, the archival of intimate belongings and getting lost in the slipperiness of semantics. Would be great to see you there!
