If you've just updated your distro to realise that your fav bitmap you use in all your GTK applications does not work any more, then don't waste an hour of confusion, like me, fiddling around with fontconfig, etc.

has just dropped the support for bitmap fonts.

The only workaround is to convert the bitmap font to Bitmap format with . Some Linux distros have started to package their popular bitmap fonts (like Terminus) in this format.
