I adapted the offending code to use busy-waiting barriers and its performance (in WINE on Linux at least) was much improved.
@mathr wine development has been really active in the past few years. Mostly driven by the need to have decent game experience and is also benefiting recently from Valve's proton (their wine based compat layer to run steam distributed win binaries), also, all together this is really revitalising efforts on Mesa, Vulkan and free software GPU drivers.
